Net run rate in cricket, usually shortened to NRR, is the number used to separate teams that finish a tournament on the same number of points. It rewards sides that score quickly and restrict their opponents. This guide explains what it means, walks through a full worked example with numbers, and clears up the most common confusions.

What net run rate in cricket actually measures

Net run rate measures how fast a team scores its runs compared with how fast it lets the opposition score. A positive NRR means you generally outscore opponents over the same number of overs; a negative NRR means the reverse. In a league table where two teams have equal points, the side with the higher NRR usually finishes above the other.

It is a tie-breaker, not the main way of deciding matches. Wins and points always come first, and NRR only matters when teams are level on points and someone has to be ranked higher.

One thing to keep clear: net run rate has nothing to do with the result of a single match. You can win a low-scoring thriller and still drag your NRR down, or lose narrowly and barely dent it. It is purely a measure of margins.

The net run rate formula

The formula is simpler than it looks:

NRR = (Total runs scored / total overs faced) – (Total runs conceded / total overs bowled)

The first bracket is your scoring rate across the whole tournament; the second is the rate you allowed your opponents. Subtract the second from the first and you have your net run rate.

A worked net run rate example with real numbers

Imagine a T20 team, the Mumbai Strikers, who play two league matches. Here is how their net run rate in cricket is worked out step by step.

Match 1: Mumbai bat first and score 165 in their full 20 overs. The opponents reply with 150 in their full 20 overs.

Match 2: Mumbai score 200 in 20 overs. They then bowl out the opponents for 140 in 17 overs.

Now apply the formula across both games:

  • Total runs scored: 165 + 200 = 365
  • Total overs faced: 20 + 20 = 40
  • Scoring rate: 365 / 40 = 9.125
  • Total runs conceded: 150 + 140 = 290
  • Total overs bowled: 20 + 20 = 40
  • Conceded rate: 290 / 40 = 7.25

So the net run rate = 9.125 – 7.25 = +1.875, usually written +1.88. A figure this high reflects fast scoring and tight bowling.

The all-out rule that trips beginners up

Notice that in Match 2 the opponents were bowled out in 17 overs, yet we still divided by 20. This is the single most important rule in NRR: if a team is bowled out, you use their full quota of overs, not the overs they actually used. The thinking is that getting dismissed early should not flatter a team’s run rate, so bowling a side out cheaply and quickly gives your net run rate a strong boost.

This rule cuts both ways. If your own team is bowled out for a low score, your batting overs are also counted as the full quota, dragging your scoring rate down hard. That is why a heavy collapse can hurt a team’s net run rate even more than the lost match itself, and why sides often bat out their overs rather than throw wickets away once a win looks unlikely.

How to convert overs correctly

Overs in cricket are counted in balls, not tenths. An over has six balls. A score made in 18.2 overs does not mean 18.2 in your calculation. It means 18 overs plus 2 balls, which is 18 + (2 / 6) = 18.33 overs. Always convert balls into sixths before dividing, or your NRR will be slightly wrong.

  • 18.1 overs = 18.17
  • 18.3 overs = 18.50
  • 18.5 overs = 18.83

Common mistakes when calculating net run rate

Most NRR errors come from a handful of slips, not hard maths:

  • Using actual overs for a team that was bowled out. If a side is dismissed in 16.4 overs in a 20-over match, you must still divide by 20. Using 16.67 here is the most frequent mistake of all.
  • Reading 18.2 overs as 18.2. As shown above, the figures after the dot are balls, so 18.2 becomes 18.33. Forgetting this throws every answer out by a little.
  • Averaging the NRR of each match. You cannot add two single-game net run rates and divide by two. NRR is built from cumulative totals of runs and overs, then subtracted once at the end.
  • Only counting your own scoring. NRR is a difference between two rates: a team scoring 9 an over but conceding 9 an over has an NRR of zero, not +9.
  • Including a washed-out game. A match with no result adds nothing to either side’s runs or overs.

How teams chase to boost their net run rate

Because every run and over counts, captains often play with NRR in mind in the final group games. Suppose a team is set 160 to win in 20 overs but needs a healthy net run rate to qualify. Reaching 160 in 15 overs instead of 20 lifts its scoring rate sharply, because the runs are divided by fewer overs.

Here is the quick maths. Chasing 160 in exactly 15.0 overs gives a scoring rate of 160 / 15 = 10.67 for that game; taking the full 20 overs would give only 160 / 20 = 8.00. That gap of more than two runs per over can be the difference between finishing third and missing the playoffs, which is why a team batting second often keeps attacking even after the win is certain.

A mini league table where net run rate breaks the tie

The clearest way to see why NRR matters is when two teams finish level on points. Imagine a T20 group where Team A and Team B both win two games and lose one, so both end on 4 points. Each has batted and bowled a full 60 overs across three matches. Their season totals look like this:

Team Runs scored Overs faced Runs conceded Overs bowled
Team A 500 60 460 60
Team B 500 60 480 60

Both scored 500 runs at the same rate, 500 / 60 = 8.33 per over; the difference is what they conceded:

  • Team A NRR: 8.33 – (460 / 60) = 8.33 – 7.67 = +0.67
  • Team B NRR: 8.33 – (480 / 60) = 8.33 – 8.00 = +0.33

The final group table then reads as follows, with Team A placed above Team B purely on the higher net run rate, even though both have identical points.

Position Team Points NRR
1 Team A 4 +0.67
2 Team B 4 +0.33

Team A conceded 20 fewer runs while scoring exactly the same, and those 20 runs are the entire reason it qualifies and Team B does not.

Why net run rate decides tournaments

In leagues like the IPL or a World Cup group stage, several teams can finish on the same points, and NRR then decides who reaches the playoffs and who goes home. Field placement matters here too, since restricting runs lifts your NRR, which is why it helps to understand cricket fielding positions and how they save runs. To follow which tournaments these calculations affect, check the India cricket schedule for 2026.

Famous net run rate scenarios from real cricket

Net run rate has settled some of the biggest qualification races in the game. At the 2019 World Cup, New Zealand and Pakistan both finished on 11 points, but Pakistan had been hammered by the West Indies early on, leaving their net run rate well below New Zealand’s. The Black Caps reached the semi-finals on NRR alone, a reminder that one heavy defeat can quietly end a campaign weeks later.

The IPL has produced similar drama. In 2024, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings both reached the final league round with a single result set to decide a playoff place on net run rate. RCB won the head-to-head game by a clear margin and edged ahead of CSK on NRR, knocking them out despite level points.

How abandoned matches and bonus points affect net run rate

  • No-result and abandoned games: A washed-out match adds nothing to either side’s runs or overs. It still earns each team a point, but has zero effect on net run rate.
  • Rain-reduced matches: When overs are cut, the revised totals and revised overs go into the calculation. In games decided by the DLS method, the par or target score is used so the margin still feeds fairly into NRR.
  • Bonus points: Some domestic competitions award a bonus point for a big-margin win. That bonus changes a team’s points total, not its net run rate; the two systems sit side by side rather than overlapping.

The practical lesson is that a washed-out fixture is a missed chance to improve your NRR.

Frequently asked questions

Can net run rate be negative?

Yes. If a team concedes runs faster than it scores them over the tournament, its net run rate in cricket is a negative number, such as -0.45. A negative NRR usually means the side has lost matches heavily or struggled to score quickly even in wins.

Does net run rate carry over from match to match?

NRR is cumulative across the whole tournament, not reset each game. Every run scored, run conceded and over bowled is added to a running total, which is why one heavy loss or one big win can swing a team’s net run rate sharply.

What is the difference between run rate and net run rate?

Run rate is simply runs divided by overs in a single innings, such as 8 an over. Net run rate is the difference between a team’s scoring rate and the rate it concedes, totalled across a whole tournament. Run rate describes one innings; net run rate describes a full campaign.

What happens to net run rate in a rain-affected match?

If overs are reduced, the revised targets and overs are used in the calculation. In matches decided by the DLS method, special rules apply so the result still feeds fairly into NRR. You can read more about how the DLS method works in rain-hit matches.

What if two teams have exactly the same net run rate?

It is rare, but possible. If teams remain tied on both points and net run rate, organisers move to the next tie-breaker, usually the head-to-head result between those teams. The exact order of tie-breakers is set out in each tournament’s playing conditions.

Is a higher net run rate always better?

Yes, a higher NRR is always better for league standing. Between two teams level on points, the one with the higher net run rate ranks above the other, which is why teams chase quickly or bowl sides out, since both actions push their NRR upward.

Conclusion

Net run rate in cricket sounds technical, but it is really just your scoring rate minus the rate you allow opponents, totalled across a tournament. Remember the all-out rule, convert overs into sixths, and the maths becomes routine. Next time the table is tight, you will know exactly why one team edges ahead.
